In this module we used the phrase ‘Omnidirectional’. Omnidirectional is si mply the name of the polar patterns the XSW-D lavalier microphone picks up. What is a polar pattern? This simply is the phrase used to picture where and how the sound is being picked up as shown below with three examples:
Imagine someone talks directly into your ear, you will hear it loud and clear. However, imagine your back is turned to them, you won’t pick up what they are saying as well. However, this microphone will hear it just as well with its 360 omni pick up.

- The open front suspension mount enables the MK 4 to rest exceptionally close to the sound source.
In this module we used the phrase ‘cardioid’. Cardioid is simply the name of the polar patterns that the MK 4 picks up. What is a polar pattern? This simply is the phrase used to picture where and how the sound is being picked up as shown below with three examples:
Imagine someone talks directly into your ear, you will hear it loud and clear. However, imagine your back is turned to them, you won’t pick up what they are saying as well.

In this module we mentioned several pick-up patterns. Pick-up patterns are simply the name of how the MK 8 can listen. Imagine someone talking directly into your ear, this best describes Cardioid. Now imagine if you could hear just as well in 360, this would describe omni. Below shows the 5 pick-up patterns the MK 8 has at its disposal at the click of a switch:
Most of the images speaks for itself, however one extra benefit to the figure of 8 pick-up pattern is that it allows two artists to speak into the same microphone, facing each other, and in real time. This is great for collaboration work.
